Property Ladder S05E03
Having loads of great design ideas is a good start to a career as a property developer. Trying to cram every single one of them into a tiny terrace in Salisbury is not. Katherine Church has given up a job in computers in favour of a more creative occupation, so is in no mood to have her artistic enthusiasm curbed by Sarah Beeny's sensible advice. In Leeds Sarah has the opposite problem. She needs to persuade budget-conscious ex-financial advisor John Jessop that a little bit of time and money spent on a good finish will help lift his tired bungalow into a different league.

This week Sarah helps two aspiring property developers in London. Trying to make as much money as possible from your property is one thing, but filling a house with rooms till it bursts at the seams is quite another. In Hendon, Shaffi Ahmed is convinced she can maximise her rental income by cramming ten bedrooms into a three-bedroom house, even if that means putting them in the attic, in the ga...

Both of this week's developers are taking on listed properties, which are notoriously difficult to renovate. But developed sympathetically they can provide major returns, and this week's developers are chasing the biggest profits ever seen on Property Ladder. In Harlaxton Mark and Tammy Howard want to turn an old bakery into a desirable family home, but with a listed giant baker's oven bang in ...

Getting the right location is key to making money from property. So why have two sets of first time developers picked the most awkward locations possible for their first attempts at developing? John Burrows and Jacky Copland believe they can make a really top end luxury family house out of their sprawling, run down, listed property in Bourne, Lincolnshire. They've got the budget, and they've go...

When you've already got a full-time job, taking on a property development is a huge extra commitment and requires nifty job-juggling. This week two sets of developers take on that responsibility, but they each have very different approaches. Julie Thomas and Lee Jones are both scientists with a love of detail so they want to do all their renovation work themselves. But a surfeit of enthusiasm c...

Art deco enthusiasts Craig and Tina Young are determined to renovate a dilapidated example of the style to the highest possible standard. But will anyone in Surrey want to buy it? Meanwhile Michael Gregory and Sally Breeze are taking less of a risk by choosing to extend a family house in Clevedon. But financing it using interest-free credit cards is a nail-biting way to go about it. As the cloc...

Sarah Beeny goes back to see how Martin Sutherland is coping after he was so convinced he'd found the formula for making money out of developing in Earls Court.
Keep yourself Teachable especially if the teacher is Sarah!😊
A golden rule , Keep Yourself Teachable !!! So sorry Sarah, most people will not be open to accept your wisdom.😮
where did they find these people? It is hideous
"But I would have loved someone to come and give us a reality check right off." Uuuuuh....like Sarah did???
I LOVE it when the developers actually choose to listen to Sarah.
"What does Beeny know anyway?" Famous last words.
Jody is so annoying, I had to speed forward during her scenes.
"How hard can it be"? Famous last words...
His ego is so great he ignored Sarah's professional advice. He reminds me of a TV film gangster, but just wants to profit his own way and is utterly deluded.
He sounds pi$$ed, far too greedy and I would panic sleeping in those tiny rooms. And you do 100% need a rota in shared houses. Neighbours are not family, and there will be some who will not chip in unless told to.
Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse could do a brilliant comedy sketch based on this format. He is like a cartoon character. She is just deluded and thinking with emotions and not facts.
Omg I don't mean to be rude, but I think I just threw up in my mouth....too much colour..
Fast forward to 2024 and these properties are worth millions CRAZY!
12:44 can’t get any more Hitchcockian than that. 12:44
Mr knob 😂
Those windows are so dangerous
Why doesn't anyone listen to the presenter. They are mad!
she speaks like Mia Goth
Did it sell
Mark could finance the whole reno with an Onlyfans page. And still have lots of money left over.
Can Sarah stop whining about the annex to the cottage - they didn't have the money! Sometimes this shows feels like it is all about Sarah having the last word and being right - all the scripting and editing!
36:20 they left this in?? They didn’t cut it or censor it?? This woman is vile and of if I ever find her, she’s done in a brutal fashion.
A lot of these people are averse to profit, it seems.
This presenter is so rude.... I'm surprised she lasted so long on TV
Sarah's idea for that garage was perfect. Clueless dad couldn't rent a jackhammer and bust up some of the concrete floor? Or maybe the children want the garage stuck in the middle of the house, since they seem to have a say in everything. That Glass Wall woman and her one precious chick are creepy. She really thought that lazy boy was going to get up in the morning and persist with all that work?
Cramming the extra bedrooms in, so tiny they are unusable, was nuts. Of course, they wouldn't listen to Sarah. Two double bedrooms are fine for a house that size.
3 bedroom that nice in Bethnal GReen is at least 2,500 pound if not 3,000 per month now
Is John single....?
Sarah came by her expertise through a lot of trial and error and hard work, yet none of these clueless people chose to listen to her. I'd be thrilled to get her input. "The fact that they can't afford to do any of this work seems to have passed them by." Sarah gets in some good shots. Her expression at the glass-walled bathroom is hilarious.😆
These parents are insane. They are only enablers for their children. Get a job, for god's sake!
Did he put a fence up in the middle of the garden 😂
If she says do a 3 bed flat YOU DO A 3 BED FLAT!
i understand this was a long time ago, however even in 2007 (?) i wouldn't want my guest going upstairs i would rather them be downstairs to use the toilet. The upstairs is for my family.
That Habib has got no taste at all!!! I am so sorry that apartment was in his arms!!! If not the restrictions and Sarah’s advises the apartment would have looked horrible!!!
They make that house looking ugly!!! Who gave them the permission???????
900 000 pounds for the house near the railway and with the awful traffic noise!?????!!!!!!
Imagine having that crazy woman as your neighbour!!!! The house looks so ugly now!!!!! And now it is the hostel next to the family homes((((
That art deco house is amazing.
It should be illegal to get the chapel and divide it to two floors loosing all the beauty inside!!!!
For the industrial building it would have been better to put the kitchen-diner upstairs next to the living room!!!
Beautiful house wrong developers.
So glad to have found Sarah and her sound advice in any of her shows I have seen in recent years. She is a fountain of information and inspiration!!
I've been watching scores of these British real estate shows. One thing I don't understand is the nearly complete disregard for the number of bathrooms and how they are designed. Sarah is 100% right that the smaller house needs an upstairs bathroom. That said, taking out the downstairs bedroom would be madness. How can you get by with one bathroom in a home that is two bedrooms or bigger? Especially if you have guests for dinner, etc. You need at least a half-bath (which Brits apparently call a loo or a toilet room). I also can't understand the focus on bathtubs. Men in the US almost NEVER take baths. The only exceptions might be if a woman wants to take a bath with a man, or if it's for some medical reason. I've asked several of my male friends, and most of them can't remember the last time they took a bath. Usually it's many years ago. Even most women here shower daily, and only occasionally take baths. When they do, they often rinse off in the shower afterward. When you're taking a bath, you're sitting there in you're own filth, in a tub that other people use (and it's not cleaned in between uses every time). The most common use for bathtubs here is for bathing children and pets. On most British real estate shows (especially Location, Location, Location), they hardly mention the bathrooms, and often they are only on camera for a moment or two. In the US, a basic description of a house would include how many stories it has, how much square footage, how many bedrooms and how many bathrooms (it's a two-story, 1700 square foot home with 3 bedrooms, and 2 1/2 baths). It seems that Brits might be happy with a bucket and a galvanized tub. Sarah seems quite hung-up on the orientation of staircases, too. You don't even want or need a corridor to the stairs. That kitchen should have been moved to the front, not only for noise reasons, but also to have the living space connect directly to what Brits call the garden). The staircase is often a source of light, and it adds extra space. Dedicating a significant portion of houses this size to an entrance hall is very odd. That said, Sarah is great and the houses usually turn out to be quite nice.
The fact that her dentist friend agreed to finance another property without fully inspecting how she handled the budget on the first one shows that he's not thinking clearly either. They seem to be a match made in heaven.
She's unteachable.
Their learning curve would have been much less steep had they listened to Sarah from the beginning. It always amazes me how novices ignore her wisdom.
Why on earth did he put a double bed into what was essentially not a bedroom but a large cupboard
Why isn't it illegal to remove all those beautiful original features? 😢😢
The one thing ive learnt from watching property ladder is that you MUST be objective in these projects. Its not about you..🤔
Wow gaol lady. The unique building has already been converted to residence! It’s been irrevocably changed already! So many bad decisions.
